The FiUFRO 2022 research fair was carried out in person in the parking lot of the Aula Magna inside a 70×20 meter tent where there were 80 different stands. This year’s motto was “Science in your Hands” with the idea of representing the didactic and the return to face-to-face after the forced virtualization due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Thus, the Laboratory for the Conservation and Dynamics of Volcanic Soils was present with an educational and interactive stand called “Soil Lab: Science at your feet” where the research projects FONDECYT Regular 1220786 and 1220716, INACH RT_12_21 and ANILLO ACT210060 were disseminated and disseminated together with the activities carried out by the laboratory team and the importance of the soil resource focused on its role in mitigation and adaptation to climate change.
At the stand, the boys and girls, together with the adults, were able to see soils sampled from the different National Parks and Reserves and sites visited in the field trips carried out by the laboratory researchers, from the north of Chile with the Los Flamingos all the way south in Antarctica.
Fun activities such as “The dark box” and “Carbon capture” were crucial to capture the attention of the little ones and to be able to transmit relevant information about the carbon retention capacity of volcanic soil clays as well as the biotic and abiotic components of the soil. and their role and importance for natural resources.
